Devin Babat

Women’s Health Specialist

Devin has been in the Health and Wellness field since 2007, where she started as a massage therapist specializing in injury management, sports, and prenatal massage. She decided to further her education and attended Five Branches University in San Jose California; there she studied acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, medical qi gong, and asian bodywork. She graduated with a master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2017 with an additional certificate in orthopedic medicine and gynecology.

As a student, she was invited to intern at the Reproductive Science Center in San Ramon and completed 1 year of additional training in acupuncture to support fertility and people undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as IVF. In 2019 She was asked to join an integrative health team that provided acupuncture assistance to those undergoing IVF at the top reproductive health centers in San Francisco, while continuing to maintain and grow her own private practice in Silicon Valley.

Devin also has a set of young twins, and in 2020 she moved back to Portland to be closer to family. She joined the Portland Wellness Care team in 2022 and we are excited to have her knowledge and experience.

Menstrual Health Clinic Frequently Asked Questions

How do you talk about menstrual health to a specialist?

Most clinics are looking for more ways to help their patients because they don’t often have much to offer except monitoring, pain medication, and more extreme interventions.  Acupuncture fills in an important gap, helping to regulate menstruation and reduce extreme hormonal fluctuations without the use of pharmaceuticals or surgical intervention.

What are the main menstrual health issues?

The most common menstrual health issues that women face include missed periods (amenorrhea), painful periods (dysmenorrhea), irregular periods or constant spotting, extremely heavy flow (menorrhagia).

What are the signs of menstrual health issues?

Sudden changes in color, consistency, or flow. Sudden changes in regularity for more than 3 months. Moderate to severe pain or cramping (before, during, or after). Changes in mood during cycle such as severe irritability, depression, or mood swings. Nausea, vomiting, headaches or migraines associated with menstruation.

How do women’s health clinics help menstrual health?

Women’s health specialists will recommend therapies based on the condition of the patient, which may include:

  • A change in diet
  • Vitamin and mineral supplementation
  • pain medications
  • hormone medications
  • birth control
  • hysterectomy (extreme cases)
  • DNC (extreme cases)

Acupuncture for Menstrual Health: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, acupuncture can be beneficial for menstrual health by regulating the menstrual cycle, reducing menstrual pain and cramping, and managing hormonal imbalances.

Acupuncture works by regulating hormones, improving blood flow, and reducing stress and anxiety, all of which can have a positive impact on the menstrual cycle. Additionally, acupuncture can help relieve menstrual pain and cramping by releasing endorphins and reducing inflammation.

The best time to receive acupuncture for menstrual issues can vary based on the individual and the specific issue being treated. In general, it is recommended to receive acupuncture before, during, or after the menstrual cycle, as this can help regulate hormones and manage symptoms such as menstrual pain and cramping.

For menstrual irregularities, it may be beneficial to receive acupuncture throughout the menstrual cycle to regulate hormones and improve the menstrual cycle.

For menstrual pain and cramping, it may be beneficial to receive acupuncture just before or during the menstrual cycle when these symptoms are typically most severe.

Yes, acupuncture can have an impact on menstrual flow, as it can regulate the menstrual cycle and manage hormonal imbalances. It can increase or decrease flow depending on the needs of the patient.

The length of time it takes for acupuncture to regulate hormones can vary greatly depending on the individual and the specific issue being treated. Factors that can impact the length of time include the severity of the hormonal imbalances, the length of time the imbalances have been present, the individual’s overall health, and other factors such as stress levels and diet.

In general, some individuals may see an improvement in their hormonal balance after a few acupuncture sessions, while others may need a longer course of treatment. It is common for a course of acupuncture treatment to last several weeks or months, with treatments being spaced a few days or a week apart.
