Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. For lower body pain, such as back pain, hip pain, knee pain, or sciatica, acupuncture is often used as a complementary or alternative therapy to alleviate discomfort and promote healing.
The principle behind acupuncture is that it helps restore the balance of energy flow, known as “qi” (pronounced chee), within the body. When there’s pain or illness, it’s believed that disruptions or imbalances in this energy flow occur. By inserting needles into specific points along pathways called meridians, acupuncturists aim to stimulate these points to restore the proper flow of energy, thereby reducing pain and promoting the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Acupuncture can effectively alleviate pain by stimulating nerves and muscles, prompting the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) and reducing inflammation.
It addresses not just the symptoms but also the underlying imbalances in the body’s energy flow, aiming for a holistic approach to healing.
Compared to some medications, acupuncture typically has minimal side effects when performed by a trained professional.
Acupuncture treatments can be tailored to the individual and their specific pain condition. Practitioners customize the treatment based on the location, severity, and nature of the pain.
It can be used alongside conventional medical treatments, enhancing their effectiveness or reducing the need for high doses of pain-relieving medications.
Some individuals find that acupuncture offers long-term relief, addressing the root cause of pain rather than merely masking it temporarily.

Inserting thin needles at specific points stimulates nerves, triggering the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters. These natural chemicals help to alleviate pain and promote a sense of well-being.
Acupuncture can reduce inflammation in affected areas. By targeting specific points, it prompts the body to release anti-inflammatory substances, aiding in the healing process.
It enhances blood circulation to the lower body, promoting oxygen and nutrient delivery to injured or strained tissues. This increased circulation supports tissue repair and reduces stiffness.
Acupuncture helps relax tense muscles and reduce spasms, improving flexibility and mobility in the lower body.
According to traditional Chinese medicine principles, acupuncture aims to restore the balance of qi (energy) flow in the body. By inserting needles at precise points along meridians, it’s believed to correct imbalances, which can contribute to pain and discomfort.
Acupuncture may influence the nervous system, helping to regulate pain signals and promote a better response to pain stimuli.
