Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine for Women’s Health in Portland

We believe in treating the whole person, not just symptoms of a problem. When you establish care, a thorough intake will be conducted to understand your history. We can review all bloodwork done for fertility and any procedures that have already been tried. Recommendations for treatment, Chinese herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle modification are based on the needs of the individual and the couple.  Many patients stay with us during their entire pregnancy, to help with any complications that may arise, but also to help the fetus grow at a healthy rate by increasing blood flow to the uterus.

How Acupuncture Can Help with Women’s Health Issues

Acupuncture has a long history of use in women’s health, dating back thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. In ancient China, acupuncture was used to treat a wide range of women’s health conditions, including infertility, menstrual disorders, and pregnancy-related problems.

Throughout the centuries, the use of acupuncture in women’s health has evolved and expanded. In the 20th century, acupuncture was introduced to the Western world and its use in treating women’s health conditions has gained popularity, particularly in the areas of infertility and menstrual disorders.

Today, acupuncture is commonly used in combination with other treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), to improve the success rate of fertility treatments. It is also used to help regulate the menstrual cycle, relieve menstrual pain, and reduce symptoms of menopause.

It is important to note that while acupuncture and Western medicine have different approaches to treating women’s health conditions, they can also be complementary and used together for the best outcomes.

Acupuncture for Women’s Health: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, acupuncture can help with incontinence. Acupuncture has been found to improve symptoms of urinary incontinence by relaxing the pelvic muscles, improving bladder control, and reducing bladder overactivity (Chen et al., 2018).

Acupuncture can stimulate specific points on the body to help balance the nervous system and improve the functioning of the muscles and organs involved in bladder control. Additionally, acupuncture has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system, which can help reduce stress and anxiety that may be contributing to incontinence (Gao et al., 2020).

Studies have found that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for urinary incontinence, including stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and mixed incontinence (Zhang et al., 2016; Kim et al., 2019).

Acupuncture can help with bladder control by improving the functioning of the muscles and organs involved in bladder control and by balancing the nervous system.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body, which can help to relax the pelvic muscles and improve bladder control. It has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system, which can reduce bladder overactivity and help prevent involuntary urine loss. Additionally, acupuncture can help improve the functioning of the muscles and organs involved in bladder control by balancing the nervous system, improving blood flow, and reducing inflammation (Kim et al., 2019).

Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture and herbal remedies, can help with vaginal dryness by addressing the underlying imbalances in the body that are contributing to the condition.

Vaginal dryness can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, menopause, stress, and certain medications. Chinese Medicine views vaginal dryness as an indication of a broader imbalance in the body, and works to address this imbalance through a combination of acupuncture and herbal remedies.

Acupuncture can help by improving circulation and hormone balance, which can help to increase natural lubrication in the vagina. Additionally, acupuncture can help reduce stress and anxiety, which can contribute to vaginal dryness (Gao et al., 2020).

Herbal remedies can also be used to address vaginal dryness by restoring balance to the body and supporting overall health. For example, Chinese herbs such as ginseng and angelica can help to support hormonal balance and improve circulation, while herbs such as black cohosh and Dong Quai can help to relieve symptoms of menopause, including vaginal dryness (Xu et al., 2020).

There is some evidence to suggest that acupuncture can have an effect on the levels of estrogen in the body.

Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins and other hormones in the body, which can have an effect on estrogen levels. Additionally, acupuncture has been found to have a balancing effect on the nervous system, which can help to regulate the hormonal system, including the production and regulation of estrogen (Cheng et al., 2019).

Studies have found that acupuncture can help improve symptoms of hormonal imbalances, including hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness, which are often associated with decreased levels of estrogen in women during menopause (Gao et al., 2020).

Cysts are noncancerous growths that can occur in various parts of the body, including the ovaries, breasts, and thyroid gland. In some cases, cysts can be managed with dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as herbal remedies and acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been shown to have a regulating effect on the body’s hormonal system, and can help to alleviate symptoms associated with cysts, such as pain and discomfort. Additionally, acupuncture can help to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support overall health and well-being.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the ovaries. They are usually harmless, but some can cause pain, bloating, and other symptoms. In some cases, ovarian cysts may resolve on their own, but others may require medical treatment.

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine may be able to help with the management of ovarian cysts by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and balancing the body’s hormonal system. Additionally, acupuncture can help to alleviate symptoms associated with ovarian cysts, such as pain, discomfort, and irregular menstrual cycles.

There are several natural remedies that may help to shrink uterine cysts, but it is important to note that not all will be appropriate for all individuals.

Here are some remedies that may help:

  • Dietary changes: Eating a healthy diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants may help to support hormonal balance and reduce inflammation.
  • Herbs: Certain herbs, such as chasteberry, red clover, and dong quai, have been traditionally used to support hormonal balance and reduce the size of uterine cysts.
  • Heat therapy: Applying heat to the lower abdomen may help to relieve pain and discomfort associated with uterine cysts.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity, such as walking, cycling, or yoga, may help to reduce stress and support hormonal balance.
  • Stress management: Practicing stress-reducing activities, such as meditation, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation, may help to support hormonal balance and reduce the size of uterine cysts.

It is important to note that the size and severity of uterine cysts can vary greatly, and that not all remedies may be appropriate for all individuals.
